Why Do We Need Indestructible Dog Beds?
If you’re reading this and thinking, why on earth would I need an indestructible dog bed, then you can move on.
But if you’ve got an aggressive chewing breed, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about.
It’s not only the usual suspects like huskies, boxers, Staffordshire terriers, Jack Russells, Beagles, and Labradors that are likely to chew their beds, however. There are many reasons for destructive chewing — boredom, separation anxiety, and puppy teething can all be triggers.
Let’s face it: most dogs like a good chew every so often no matter what breed they are, and certainly when they are puppies.
Unfortunately, bed chewing can be extremely hazardous to your dog’s health, and in the worst circumstances, can even cause death.
Lumps of fabric and filling and gnawed plastic can be a choking hazard, and if your dog actually eats parts of his bed, it can cause diarrhea or even a blockage in his gastric system, which may require surgery to correct.
Sadly, there have even been accounts of dogs strangling themselves to death, having gotten tangled in the filling of their bed.
Everyone wants their pets to be safe from harm, so it’s important to avoid cheaper, low-quality options and invest in a safe and comfortable chew proof dog bed — it could save your dog’s life.

What Makes a Chew Proof Dog Bed?
Of course, simply slapping a ‘chew proof’ sticker on an expensive dog bed doesn’t make it indestructible. Many dog owners are excited to hear of indestructible dog beds, but in truth, no dog bed is truly indestructible.
Materials
Dog beds that are described as indestructible are usually just exceptionally tough and made from quality, durable materials that are much harder for dogs to chew through than a standard dog bed.
In addition, the higher level of craftsmanship of an indestructible or chew proof dog bed means that they are sure to last much longer than an ordinary dog bed if properly looked after.
A chew proof dog bed should be made from a super tough material like heavy-duty nylon that doesn’t rip or tear easily.
Ideally, this should also be a waterproof material or water repellent and easy to clean, as your dog’s bed should be kept as fresh and free from dirt and bacteria as possible.
Removable Covers and Zipper Designs
Removable covers with zips may seem like a good idea, but the zipper is a weak point in the design that a curious chewer will quickly exploit. Zips are easy to grab and pull, risking tearing the cover. Seams are another weak point, so designs that feature fewer seams or concealed seams are preferable.
The Design
The design should be very sturdy but comfortable, with proper support for your dog’s body weight and size — particularly if your dog is older and suffering from joint pain.
This is why the filling of an indestructible dog bed is another crucial factor to consider.
The Filling
Denser fillings like memory foam are more appropriate for larger dogs as they give good support, but they will be less comfortable for a smaller, lighter dog.
The filling should be well sealed and ideally protected with an internal waterproof covering. Also, a quality dog bed filling won’t sag or clump, so it will last much longer.
Comfort
Comfort should also be at the top of the list when choosing any new dog bed. Since chew proof dog beds are typically made of more durable materials, you want to find options that will still be comfortable for your dog, like a bolster dog bed or orthopedic dog bed.
What Kind of Chewer Do You Have?
Another consideration when looking for the best indestructible dog beds is to determine what kind of chewer you have. Again, the dog breed plays a big role here. Some dogs love eating zippers off their bed, while others love to dig and tear until they reach the filling inside.
For more aggressive chewers, you may want to refrain from a bed that features zippers. Instead, look for one that is more impenetrable and harder for them to sink their teeth into.
With that in mind, let’s explore the best indestructible dog beds that the market has to offer…

Indestructible Dog Bed FAQ
You may still have questions as you continue your search for an indestructible dog bed. We hope we can answer some of those questions below with our brief FAQ.
What dog needs an indestructible dog bed?
If you have a dog that just can’t resist the urge to scratch and chew, then you may require an indestructible dog bed. However, keep in mind that no bed will be completely indestructible, especially if you have a determined and aggressive chewer on your hands – like an angry husky!
Why do dogs chew their bed?
There are several reasons your dog may chew their bed. These can include boredom and anxiety, an underlying health problem, and simple exploration, curiosity, and instinct.
Chewing is instinctual for a dog. So, instead of trying to stop the behavior altogether, find ways to redirect your dog’s attention toward items that are acceptable to chew.
What is the best material for a dog bed?
If you are dealing with a chewer, find a dog bed that offers a good balance between comfort and durability. This means reinforced stitching, dense fibers, and a durable exterior.
A chew proof dog bed should be made of a durable and high-quality material that is hard for a dog to rip and tear apart. Ballistic nylon, thick denim, nylon or polyester ripstop fabric, or heavy canvas are the best options.
How do you stop a dog from chewing on a bed?
Sometimes it can help to offer your dog a distraction. If you want your dog to stop chewing on their bed, try offering them toys and treats while rotating options to keep them interested.
You can also try a spray taste deterrent. It is something you can spray onto the dog bed or whatever you want to deter them from chewing.
Finally, make sure your dog is getting plenty of exercise, so he is too tired to chew and instead goes to sleep at bedtime.
Has your dog tried any of these? Let us know what is working best for your chewer!
I don’t believe that a bed can chew free beds. I am not buying a new bed for my dog because he destroys him. If you are giving guarantee then I will surely try it.
Thank you!
I just want to give a +1 to the k9 Ballistics ‘Tuff’ dog bed. I have a border collie who is the definition of a power chewer and he’s basically just slept on this bed since we bought it – no chewing! This is from the dog that I’ve taken to the vet after he swallowed a zipper on a cheap, old bed! Thanks
Hi Michael,
We agree — the Tuff bed is awesome! So pleased that your collie is enjoying it too. Long may it last!
Hi,
my dog is only about 50-55 lbs but he chews like nobody’s business! I honestly don’t think a fabric bed is a good idea for him. What do you suggest???
Hi Chey,
If you want to avoid the fabric beds, we suggest that you start with the raised beds with metal/PVC frames. As your dog is on the lighter side, we think you’d do well with the Kuranda dog bed. It’s virtually chew proof and much more comfortable than it looks. The raised profile is also a great benefit for older dogs and those with arthritis who struggle with getting in and out of floor-level beds. Hope that helps.
This is a great article. It can really solve your problem with your pets chewing their beds. I particularly appreciated the differences between chew-proof and indestructible beds. It’s very detailed. You can really choose what’s best for your pets.
