Why use a bark control collar? Dogs bark for a variety of reasons, but some are more persistent, especially when it’s due to anxiety.
Oftentimes these behaviors can be curbed with training, but there are cases where additional tools are necessary.
A bark control collar is used to give an instant correction to unwanted behaviors by delivering punishment immediately as the action is taken. Point in case: if they bark, they feel a shock.
The PetSafe Basic Bark Control Collar offers six levels of progressive correction, and claims to be one of the best of its kind on the market.
It has the ability to provide vibration, sound, and a literal shock, but also leverages high level technology to make sure corrections are given at just the right times.
It certainly sounds like a wise and safe option, but is it really?
To help you decide, we’ve broken down all the good and the bad of this control collar, so you can be certain for yourself.

PetSafe Basic Bark Control Collar Pros
Customizable to the Needs of Your Pet
The PetSafe Basic Bark Control Collar works by activating the first time your dog barks, then being on standby for the following 30 seconds.
Should a second bark come in this time, it administers a vibration which warns the animal to cease and desist.
Should it not comply, it will receive a small but very uncomfortable shock, accompanied by a beep. Together, this works to use sound, feeling, and a small degree of pain to teach your pet to stop barking unnecessarily.
For some dogs, the reminding vibration may be enough to stop the unwanted behavior, and further corrective actions will be unnecessary.
This is fantastic for fast-learning pets who don’t need a heavy hand, and it still allows your dogs to bark as a warning or alert – just not too much.
Allows Your Dog to Still Enjoy Activities
The collar itself is waterproof, so you can have your dog outdoors in all types of weather without fear of the collar malfunctioning.
If your pet likes to swim, the collar is submersible for up to five feet, and is lightweight enough to not interfere with their daily activities.
No Room for Accidents
Since the collar requires both noise and vibration to administer a correction, it will not be set off by another dog or other noises, meaning your training efforts are accurate and concise.
An automatic safety shut-off will also stop the corrections after 50 seconds to ensure the safety of your dog.

PetSafe Basic Bark Control Collar Cons
Batteries Have a Low Lifespan
Although it comes with batteries, you can only get additional batteries for this product from PetSafe.
The batteries typically last 3-6 months, but will wear out faster with more frequent use.
Fitting Sizes Are Troublesome
While adjustable, it does not come in sizes small enough for some dogs.
The end of the collar may need to be cut off on smaller dogs to avoid having a long belt dangling uncomfortably from the neck.
Additionally, because it needs to fit certain criteria (sound and vibration), if it is not fitted properly, it will not work.
It needs to be tight enough to feel the vibrations, but not too tight as to hurt the dog. It also needs to be situated in the correct spot on the neck.
This can take some time to find the correct placement, and if the collar slips from that spot, it will no longer work correctly.
Extras May Need to Be Purchased
Longer probes for dogs with baggy skin or a lot of fur around the neck need to be purchased separately. Without this added expense, the product will not work correctly.
This is especially frustrating if your dog tends to have a large coat in the winter but sheds to a lighter shape in the summer, as the extras will be necessary but not always.
Some other similar products will keep tally of the barks so that you can better understand if your dog is learning appropriate behaviors or not.
Unfortunately, this product does not have any kind of programming to show how often your dog is barking, how often the escalation of corrections is necessary, or any other information.
PetSafe Basic Bark Control Collar Overall Verdict
While some pet owners will prefer not using shock collars, the PetSafe Basic Bark Control Collar offers a wide variety of corrections and a host of safeguards to make it an appealing choice nonetheless.
It’s priced reasonably, durable enough to be used on multiple dogs once a certain pet has learned their lesson, and it delivers results.
The only question is, do you want to buy the extras and invest in the batteries? If you have a problem with this, you might have to look for an alternative.
That wraps up our review on the PetSafe Basic Bark Control Collar. Will you give it a try it on your pup?
