No matter your dog’s age, breed, or level of training, sometimes, it pays to check in on them. If you work during the day or are out of the house often, you have three choices: hire a pet-sitter, bribe friends to check in on them, or accept that you may come home to a stressed dog and a messy home.
Luckily, the Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera offers a better solution. By connecting to your smartphone, it lets you not only view your pet’s activities, but also talk and listen to them. Even better, it’s easy to set up, is equipped with an Alexa feature, and lets you interact and play with your pet remotely.
While the speakers aren’t very powerful, and you may encounter a few bugs in the app, it could still be your ideal fit for a camera for your pets. Before you decide, let’s take a closer look at the Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera. Do its pros outweigh its cons?
Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera: The Details
- Wi-Fi Compatibility: 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz.
- HD Video Specs: 1080P full HD video.
- Wide Angle View: 160 degree view.
- Zoom: 4x zoom.
- Two Way Audio? Yes.
- Night Vision? Yes.
- Subscription Required? Optional.
The Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera comes with full HD 1080P video. Additionally, it features 160 degrees’ worth of panning from its base location, and comes with 4x digital zoom, so you can inspect your pet’s activities more closely. Since it’s equipped with night vision that engages automatically in dark conditions, dim-lit rooms or late hours won’t affect your video quality.
This pet camera also has two-way audio, which allows you to talk to your pet from wherever you are. In return, you can hear your dog barking or your cat meowing. The four microphones, duplex sound, and speaker bars combine to ensure even the smallest noises are detected.
You can speak to your pet through the app and it will transmit to the speaker on the camera. Some people’s pets really seem to enjoy hearing the voice of their owner throughout the day. The interaction can help a dog or cat feel more comfortable during long hours alone.
Sound and Motion Detection
Speaking of detection, this pet camera features motion and sound detection. While many designs on the market only feature one, this Play 2 offers both. As such, if your pet moves in front of the camera or makes a noise near it, you’ll receive an alert on your phone. From there, you can check in to make sure everything is okay.
This can easily double as a home security feature, since it will alert you to any motion or sound. If someone enters your home and triggers the camera, you’ll be notified just like if your pet triggers the camera.
The Petcube has what they call “human recognition” – it can recognize the difference between your pets versus if a human enters the area. This can be an additional helpful security feature for those wanting to use the Play as a security camera, not just a pet camera.
The most unique feature of this Petcube camera is the built-in laser toy. The laser is safe for both pets and humans, allowing you to play with your dog or cat remotely. Just visit the app and move the laser with a press of your finger on the screen.
Alternatively, you can set the camera to “auto-play,” so it moves the laser around independently. This ensures your pet gets their exercise even when you’re too busy to check in.
The Petcube has an optional subscription service that lets you receive smart alerts and automatic video recordings for a fee. You can currently buy a year of service for around $50. With the subscription, you also receive deals and coupons for many pet supplies, products, and different services.
The Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera is one of the only cameras to feature a built-in Alexa feature. You won’t need a separate Amazon Echo or other Alexa-enabled device; it comes along with it.
Just talk to the camera and watch it execute your commands. This feature enables you to start a laser game, play music, control your other smart devices, set alarms, listen to the latest news, or even check the weather.
Alexa has more than 80,000 commands available – just tap the button in your app and explore the possibilities!
Bark and Meow Detection
This camera recognizes when your dog barks or your cat meows, and will notify you if it hears it. You will receive a push notification on your phone saying that the Petcube detected a bark or a meow and you can immediately pull up the video and see why your pet may be barking or meowing.
As all pet-centered objects need to be, the Petcube is sturdy. It’s crafted from aluminum and hard plastic, making it nearly indestructible. In addition to the tough materials, it has a non-slip rubberized bottom to keep it from sliding (or being pushed by a curious cat) off flat surfaces.
It also comes with a standard tripod mount, in case you don’t have a flat surface to rest the camera on.
There are always concerns about privacy and security with cameras placed in your home and recording and transmitting information. The Petcube company stands behind their security, with the 30-second video clips of your pets stored in the cloud and protected by 256-bit AES encryption.
Petcube states on their website, “Privacy is our top priority.”
You can feel good about bringing the Petcube cameras into your home.
Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera Review
Easy to Set Up
Setting up the Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera is very straightforward. First, you’ll download the Petcube app on your smartphone and then plug the Play 2 into the nearest outlet. When it’s completely booted up, the light will blink green. From there, open the app, create an account, and log in.
Within the app, select “connect your device.” When the LED light on the camera is blinking, hit “next.” Your device will appear in the app. Click it and then hit “next.” It will then connect to your Wi-Fi. You’ll know it’s fully synced when the green light on the camera turns white.
Easy to Use
The Petcube is very simple to use. Once everything is connected, you can operate all its features via the app. If you want to check on your pet, talk to them, listen to what’s happening in your home, or play the laser game, simply tap one of the icons inside the app.
Whether you’re at work, visiting a friend, or running errands, you can remain better connected with your pet from a distance. It’s as easy as checking Facebook or Twitter on your phone – and far more gratifying.
There is a slight learning curve to using the laser toy effectively, but it’s doable. If you struggle with the controls of the laser, you can always opt to let the laser move itself in the automatic play mode.
This camera is designed to provide convenience – and it definitely achieves that. You no longer have to worry if your pet is creating a mess, misbehaving, or suffering from separation anxiety; just open the app on your phone, check in, play with them, or reinforce their training from anywhere! The auto-play feature even helps your pet remain active and entertained when you lack the time.
Unlike some bulky designs you’ll find on the market, this pet camera is highly compact. You can place it nearly anywhere. It’s comparable to a small speaker, so when you’re at home, you’ll barely notice it’s there. You can place it on a small table, in a book shelf, or in a tiny space where nothing else will fit. So long as it’s stable and gives you a clear view of the room, any area will be fine.
Since it has an ultra wide angle viewing capability, even a small room will be mostly visible with this small camera. The small size of the Petcube mixed with the ultra wide angle lens means that it’s easier to check on your pets, no matter where they are, even in small spaces in your house or apartment.
Unfortunately, the app has a few bugs. It may disconnect from the camera, making it impossible to check on your pet or do anything besides view the app interface. In some cases, you can reboot it remotely – but in others, you’ll have to return home and reset it.
Luckily, this is only a problem for those who live in busy areas, where connection speeds may already suffer. Beyond that, Petcube is rolling out performance updates on a routine basis, so connection problems you face now may be resolved in short order.
The speakers on this pet camera aren’t perfect. If you’re using the Play 2 as a replacement for an Amazon Echo or Alexa-enabled device, the music or sound you play through it won’t be the best quality. It’s great enough for the two-way audio, but it’s not as clear as an Amazon Echo.
After going through all the positives and negatives, we do recommend the Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera. It’s easy to set up, compact, and offers excellent convenience. Match that to its automatic functions, laser games, and high quality feed, and you have a very advanced pet camera. This makes it perfect for those who would love to hang out with their pets all day, but have to work.
There are downsides to consider, but, overall, the positives far outweigh the negatives here.
With devices like the Petcube Play 2 Pet Camera, you can easily see, talk, and even play with your pet on the go. If they need reassurance, some quality time with you, or correction along the way, it’s as simple as checking your phone.
Now you don’t have to accept an unhappy pet or hire a sitter; you can enjoy the best of an active life and owning an adorable companion.
