When it comes to big dogs, finding the right bed for your furry friend can be a challenge, so we thought.
Until we encountered the Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed.
Big Barker dog beds have been especially designed for large and extra large hounds, and their pillow top orthopedic dog bed is one of the most popular on the market.
But, it’s also one of the most expensive — so is it worth the hype?
We’ve put it to the test in our Big Barker dog bed review…
What are Big Barker Dog Beds?
Dogs need their own beds: they allow them to have their own special, personal space to chill out and be comfortable.
A bed is even more important for large breed dogs, as they may find it difficult to get comfortable elsewhere.
Fortunately, US brand Big Barker have dedicated years of research to create the perfect bed for big dogs.
Big dogs are heavy, so they need a bed with a substantial base to support their weight without causing flattening to the foam. Big Barker beds have a 7 inch thick foam base fabricated using several layers of high performance foams of different densities sandwiched together to create excellent support and comfort — even for dogs with joint problems.
This orthopedic foam is also extremely robust, and is unlikely to sag with usage over time.
Big Barker are so proud and confident of the quality of their dog beds that in the improbable event of the bed flattening within the first 10 years of use, you will receive a replacement bed completely free of charge. All you need to do to benefit from this impressive warranty is to register your purchase.
The design of the Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed is simple yet stylish.
For your dog it features a specially contoured head rest at one end to allow him to rest his head comfortably at a higher level, but leaves the rest of the surface of the bed flat so he is free to move around and change position easily. The fact that there is no border around the bed also means that it is super easy for your furry friend to hop in and out of without hurting his joints.
For you, this big dog bed comes in a choice of three colors — khaki, burgundy and chocolate- – which will fit well with most interiors. The covers are easily removable (they zip up) and machine washable, which is crucial for keeping your dog clean, comfortable and free from germs and parasites.
It is worth noting that this is not an anti-chew bed, but the microfiber cover can nevertheless stand up to some hard use.
The Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed is available in three sizes – large (48″ x 30″ x 7″), extra large (52″ x 36″ x 7″), and giant size (60″ x 48″ x 7″), so you are sure to find the appropriate size for your pooch.
Unsure which size to go for? Measure your dog to find the best fit, he should have enough room to stretch out and turn around with ease.
What are Orthopedic Dog Beds?
Unfortunately, just like us, our dogs grow older, and with old age can come a host of physical issues — particularly for larger breeds with bigger bones and heavier bodies.
Weight gain, joint problems like arthritis and other aches and pains can all cause your pet discomfort, so steps must be taken to ensure that he is at his happiest and most comfortable. A good dog bed can help prevent certain health problems and delay the onset of age related aches and pains.
The most crucial thing we should provide our aging pets with is physical support. The Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed is one of the orthopedic dog beds most highly recommended by veterinarians available.
The layered orthopedic foam base acts like a memory foam which moulds to your dog’s shape, giving them support where they needs it most, while at the same time relieving pressure on painful points.
As stated earlier in this review, the simple, low design of the Big Barker bed also allows for easy access, meaning that it’s easy for your dog to climb onto — even if they suffer from limited mobility — and the large surface means they can stretch out and get comfortable without any restriction to their movements.
There is more to comfort than just having the right type of support however: temperature is also key.
Keeping your dog warm will soothe their joints and muscles, and though the Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed is not a heated model, the thick layers of orthopedic foam will help keep your pup elevated away from drafts at ground level.
In addition as the special foam moulds around your dog’s body it provides a greater level of insulation, keeping them cozy.
Big Barker Dog Bed Review
Incredibly High Quality
The Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed doesn’t come cheap, but its superior design and durability more than justifies its high price tag.
Hand crafted in the USA by a very reputable company, this bed is made using only the highest quality of materials. Some people argue that it’s higher quality than the bed that they sleep in!
An Unrivalled Combination of Comfort and Support
Especially designed for large and extra large dogs, the Big Barker dog bed is not only incredibly comfortable but very supportive too — perfect for dogs with joint and mobility problems.
High quality orthopedic foam moulds to shape and effectively reduces stress on painful pressure points and aching joints while the insulating memory foam and elevated height keep your dog warm, dry and away from drafts.
Not only that, but it’s roomy enough dogs to stretch out and move around whilst retaining a high level of support for comfortable sleep.
Easy to Clean
Any dog owner will tell you how difficult it can be to wash cheap dog beds.
Not only do they end up losing their shape, but they inevitably start to smell and get clogged with hair and other doggy dirt.
But not the Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed.
This bad stays clean and fresh, and is incredibly easy to maintain thanks to its machine washable cover.
Other Things we Love:
- 10 year warranty should bed not retain its original shape and height at 90%
- Excellent customer service from a small, trustworthy company — any issues are discussed and resolved quickly and efficiently
- Stylish design and choice of colors to fit unobtrusively with your decor
Undoubtedly the one factor that will make many dog owners stop before buying the Big Barker is its high price tag.
It’s definitely expensive — probably the most expensive on the market right now — and will simply be out of reach for many owners.
If you’re on the fence about purchasing it, we’d recommend you look on it as an investment. Sure, the initial outlay is expensive, but the lengthy warranty means that you won’t be buying new, cheap beds every few months which is likely to add up to even more expense over time.
Plus, large dogs — especially those with joint and mobility problems — require more specialist support to lead happy and comfortable lives, and specialist support doesn’t come cheap unfortunately.
Height of the Mattress Base
If your dog is particularly immobile, be aware that you may need to lift or help them on to the bed as the 7-inch height of the mattress base may be a little tall for them.
The base height lends the orthopedic dog bed a lot of qualities, such as extra support and elevation away from drafts, but it may be a little too high to access if your dog has severe disability problems.
Not Suitable for Destructive Chewers
While we’re highly impressed with the durability and sturdiness of the Big Barker dog bed, you should be aware that the product isn’t advertized as being chew resistant.
If your dog is one of the more destructive chewing breeds and is known to chew their beds to pieces, you may not experience the same durability with this bed as a more moderate chewer might.
Of course, not every power chewer will chew their bed — our husky can really go to town on a KONG Extreme but loves snuggling up on his Big Barker!
It’s also worth noting that the Amazon reviews for this product are overwhelmingly positive, with very few owners having any problems with rips and tears.
It’s hard not to love the Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed — and it’s hard to imagine your big four legged friend won’t love it too. The quality of this handcrafted dog bed is tremendously high, and especially engineered for large dogs — something that is very hard to find elsewhere.
Yes, the price is a big drawback, but this big dog bed will last for far longer than any other, so as an investment we think it makes sense, and it will be kind to your pup during his later years or if he develops any mobility issues.
So we say, invest in this bed and you’ll be making a wise choice for your doggy pal — both for now and in the future.
He’ll love you all the more for it and you can be happy in the knowledge that you’ve given him the best.
