How Often Should I Bathe My Dog?

We all know some dogs that can get really smelly.

They love to roll around in the mud, and sometimes even their own poop!

But huskies and mini huskies are very clean animals who strive to keep themselves free of dirt. Sure, they might roll around in the dirt occasionally, but generally they’re able to clean themselves pretty well.

It can actually do your husky more harm than good to bathe them more than once every two months — particularly if you’re using shampoo on them.

Their lustrous double coats are prone to drying out if they’re washed too often, which can lead to increased shedding, dry hair and itchy skin.

Not what your husky wants.

So, to ensure that your pup enjoys a healthy coat, make sure that you keep all shampooing to a minimum.

If they do get dirty in between shampooings, a good rinse down with just warm water will more than suffice.

Can I Use Human Shampoo to Clean My Dog?

If you’re wondering whether it’s possible to cut a few corners and simply use your own shampoo on your husky, the answer is no.

Human shampoo is much more chemically-ridden and stringent than dog products, and will be quick to strip your dog’s hair of their natural oils and dry up their skin.

Cue lots of itching and irritable pups.

Not only does your dog have much more sensitive skin than humans, but also a different chemical make-up which could be upset with the wrong shampoo. Whereas humans have slightly acidic skin, canine skin is more alkaline. When you apply a shampoo formulated for acidic skin onto alkaline skin, you have a recipe for a serious case of pH imbalance: that means viruses and bacteria will find it much easier to penetrate your dog’s skin and affect their health.

While you may find it cheaper and more convenient to use human shampoo on your dog, a good quality dog shampoo is actually a great investment: it can support your dog’s health and works out cheap in the long-term because you’ll only need to use it once every few months.

You can also consider a waterless shampoo as a quick fix if you are in a pinch.

Step-by-Step Guide to Bathing Your Dog

Just like young kids, many dogs don’t look forward to bath time.

While they love spending time with you, and being lavished with attention, having someone so thoroughly invade their personal space is something they could really do without.

Some dogs might even get a little territorial and upset when you try to wash them, so it’s best to follow a strict guide to make it as easy and painless for the both of you.

Step 1: Preparation

Good prep is half the story for a successful doggy bath time. If you ensure that you have everything you need to hand, there’ll be no scrabbling about later when Fido is wet and covered in shampoo suds.

Here’s what you need to hand:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Treats
  • Cotton wool balls to plug the ears and dry the eyes
  • Muzzle and straps, if necessary
  • Towel

Step 2: Water Temperature

Once everything’s ready but before you put your dog in the bath, make sure that the water temperature is correct.

Dog’s have much more sensitive skin than us humans and can get burned by hot water easily. Test the water temperature with your elbow to make sure that it’s warm but not too hot.

Step 3: Load Them into the Bath

Remove their collar and, if necessary, attach their muzzle or bathing straps to keep them in place. You will likely either be in a bathtub or a wet room. You may want to lay down towels or waterproof canvas if you’re worried about the room getting wet.

Prime them for the bath by gently introducing them to the water, lightly spraying some warm water on their backs.

You can plug their ears by putting a cotton wool ball in each of them, and try to repel water from their eyes by applying a little vaseline around them.

Step 4: The Wash

Starting at the head and moving down the body, thoroughly wet your dog with the warm water. It’s best to work quickly yet gently to make sure that your husky doesn’t get too irritated.

Once they’re totally wet, start to work the shampoo into a lather, again starting at the head and working quickly down the body.

If you want to really make sure that they’re enjoying the full extent of the shampoo, use a brush in the direction of hair growth to really massage it in.

Then, rinse the whole body thoroughly of the shampoo from head to toe. At this point, you may want to repeat the process with conditioner. You’ll know that they’re totally rinsed of the shampoo and conditioner once the water runs clear off their body.

Step 5: Leaving the Bath

Now you can turn the water off, remove the muzzle and straps, and wrap your husky in a big towel.

After they’ve completed their customary soak-everything-in-the-room shake down.

Bring them out of the bath and dab their hair to towel dry (rubbing could create tangles and mats).

You can let their coat air-dry from this point, although remember to keep them in the warm until they’re totally dry.

To guarantee a sleek, tangle-free coat, brush them thoroughly to remove any dead hair once they’re out of the bath.

Does My Dog Need Conditioner?

Now that practically all humans use conditioner on their own hair, some people have wondered if there’s a benefit to using it on their pup’s coat too.

The answer is: Yes!

All natural dog conditioners will seal the hair cuticle and restore shine and moisture to your dog’s coat.

Shampooing, brushing and general rough and tumble can all be tough on a dog’s hair. Dog conditioners will work to reverse this damage and rejuvenate it back to glossy health.

It’s especially handy if your dog’s hair edges on the dry side or if they’re prone to shedding. It can do wonders for a husky’s coat.

Just like with shampoos, however, it’s imperative that you use specially formulated dog conditioner and not just your normal human conditioner. This can wreck your dog’s coat and dry it out further, rather than moisturizing it.
